Candi Barong is a Hindu remain, situated in Candisari village, Bokoharjo, Prambanan. The temple got its name from the kala decoration on the niches that look like Barong. Other name of this temple is Candi Sari Suragedug as mentioned in Ratu Boko Inscription date back 856 in Sanskrit alphabets and in Old Javanese language. The inscription mentions KIng Kumbaja or Sri Kalasobhava constructed lingga, Krttiwasalingga as companion of Dewi Sri, Dewi Suralaksmi as companion of Triyarbakalingga . And it is assumed that the mentioned building is Candi Barong.

Pereng Inscription date back 863  written in Sanskrit, and old Javanese language mentioned that in 860, Rakai Walaing Pu Kumbhayoni presented piece of land (farm/rice paddy field) and two hills in Tamwahurang for interest of Syiva sacred building, Bhadraloka. Experts infer that Sri Kumbaja or Sri Kalasodbhava is Pu Kumbhayani  and that Siva building mentioned is Candi Barong.

Candi Barong is unlike other temples in Central Java, as it has  punden berundak structure, the real Javanese design since before the advance of Hindu.  It has 2 terraces, the first terrace is 90 meters x 63 meters, second terrace is 50 meters x 50 meters. There is a 4 meters x 3 meters stairways on the west, right in the middle of the side,  means this temple faces west. The thirs terrace is 25 x 38 meters square, higher than the second terrace and connected with 3.2 m wide stairs. The stairs is completed with railing and decorated with not obvious shape. The railing is decorated with kalpataru leaf that partly is broken. The stairs top is completed with paduraksa to the third terrace, this paduraksa is decorated with kalamakara.

The highest terrace, has 2 buildings with same size 8 meters x 8 meters, located on the north and south. Those buildings have no entrance as there were no rooms inside though according to research, there are space inside the temple;s body.The niches are empty currently, it said that there were 3 Sivaistic goddesses statuary and 4 gods statuary   discovered on the excavation.

The wall is not carved with relief, also the foot part, only the engraving of leaves and humble human figure

Tidak terdapat hiasan relief pada dinding dan kaki bangunan, hanya ada pahatan berpola dedaunan dan sosok manusia yang sederhana. Atap candi bersusun dengan puncak runcing. Pelipit atap berpola bunga dan kumuda.
